Snapchat is among the most used social media platforms in the world. In this article, you will learn if Snapchat is a good platform to grow your business.
Teaming with a large range of users and generating a large number of daily users, does Snapchat really work for your product/service or geographical location?
In this article, we will decide if Snapchat is worth your time and if spending money on Snapchat’s paid marketing would be a waste of your capital.
What is Snapchat? and is it a good platform to grow your business?
Founded in 2011, Snapchat found its way to fame as a platform on which people could send each other sensitive videos, photos, and texts that would disappear after 10 seconds or less, leaving no proof of the conversation. The application is used on smartphones.
It was initially known as “Picaboo” but was later changed to Snapchat after the developers received a cease-and-desist letter from a photo-book company with the same name, “Picaboo.”
Snapchat gained popularity among the youths with their largest user base being people from the age group 18 to 25. The reason is that the app has a somewhat difficult to master user interface. This has led to the majority of older generations not sticking to it and not using the platform.
Disclaimer: I will 100% insist on creating your own platforms and growing those. However, social networks are a key component of any marketing plan.
How Does Snapchat Work?
“Snap” is the name given to the texts, images or videos you send out via Snapchat. After the receiver has viewed the “snap”, it is automatically deleted thus leaving no clues of what was sent and once the “snap” disappears, it’s no longer accessible.
Since 2011, Snapchat has added several new features including a Snap map view that you can use to view the “snaps” of people you are not connected to from around the world. They have also added a story mode functions which have been updated over the years. The most popular being “Snapchat Stories”, which allows users to create a narrative of snaps that disappear in 24 hours.
Using Snapchat is free; however, the app does require an internet connection in order to send “snaps” but you can take snaps and save them offline.
Snapchat recently introduced a paid advertisement feature for businesses. This is the business model most large social media platforms use to get revenue. I will explain how their Ads feature works further down.
Basically, if you like using filters to change your appearance in photos or enjoy sending information you do not want the receiver to be able to retain or share with others, Snapchat is your go-to application.
Who Exactly Uses Snapchat?
The people that use Snapchat are mostly millennials. Though the application has more than 180 million average daily users, it is still a lot smaller than Facebook and other major social media applications on the market. In fact, based on users only, Snapchat is the 17th largest platform.
Here are some stats that may shed some light on the global demographies on Snapchat:
75% of Snapchat users are under 34 years old.
90% of Snapchat users are from ages 13-24.
Roughly 61% of Snapchat users are female and 38% are male.
Roughly 61% of Snapchat users access the platform daily.
30% of US Millennial Internet Users use Snapchat regularly.
Is Snapchat Popular in Uganda?
In Uganda, Snapchat is not a very popular platform. In fact, there are several more popular platforms including twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, and YouTube. There are many factors why this may be the case, however, we will not digress.
That being said, Snapchat is a rather interesting powerful tool. Pinterest is largely used as a photography application because of its several filters and lenses. By searching the Snapchat map, you do find a few users posting there. It should be noted that the majority of users will opt not to appear on the map for privacy reasons.
It’s important to note that in Africa as in Uganda, you will find the same user statistics. People do prefer Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest.
Can you Use Snapchat to Grow your Business?
How can a social media platform that is not popular be used to grow your company? This is the tricky part.
Using Snapchat cannot be a short-term plan. The fact that they have not yet penetrated the market does not mean that they will never. Being an early starter will help you learn quickly, make early mistakes and grow rapidly when the platform starts to grow.
This does not mean spending capital on paid advertisements. It simply means creating an account and keeping it up to date, fresh and exciting.
